At 87, Kris Kristofferson Reveals His Final Days (Rare Footage)
In a deeply emotional and intimate revelation, legendary singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson has opened up about what he calls “his final chapter,” offering fans a rare glimpse into his life at 87—through never-before-seen footage and heartfelt reflections.
Kris Kristofferson, a country music icon, award-winning actor, and one of America’s most influential songwriters, has long been known for his poetic honesty and fearless storytelling.
Now, facing his twilight years, the man behind timeless hits like “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” and “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” is doing what he’s always done best—telling the truth, this time about life, aging, and legacy.
In a recently released short documentary filmed over the past year, Kristofferson shares what he calls “his most personal project yet.”
The footage, which includes clips from his home in Hawaii, candid conversations with family members, and quiet moments of reflection by the sea, reveals a man who has come to terms with his journey and is choosing to face the future with grace.
“It’s been a hell of a ride,” Kristofferson says in one poignant scene. “I’ve loved hard, I’ve lived free, and now I’m learning how to let go.”
Fans have known for some time that Kristofferson’s health has been a concern. In 2016, it was revealed that he had been misdiagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and was later correctly diagnosed with Lyme disease, which had affected his memory and cognitive functions.
Though treatment brought improvement, age has continued to slow the once-vigorous performer, and he officially retired from touring in 2020.
Now at 87, Kristofferson’s presence is softer but no less powerful. The documentary showcases him strumming his guitar on the porch, surrounded by nature, and sharing laughter with his children and wife, Lisa Meyers, to whom he has been married since 1983.
His voice, though weathered, still carries the emotion and authenticity that defined his music.
“People ask me if I’m afraid,” he says. “But I’m not. I’ve had more blessings than I could ever count. I’ve made peace with the past. I’m just trying to spend what time I have left surrounded by love.”
The rare footage also touches on his deep connection to the land and the sea, elements he calls “his spiritual anchors.” Throughout the documentary, viewers are treated to sweeping views of the Hawaiian coastline and quiet walks through gardens filled with native plants—scenes that echo the themes of nature, simplicity, and mortality often found in his lyrics.
Kristofferson’s children, including musician Jody Kristofferson and daughter Kelly Marie, appear throughout the film, expressing their admiration for their father’s strength and legacy. “He’s always been this quiet storm,” Jody says. “Strong, humble, and totally fearless when it comes to living life on his own terms.”
Former collaborators and close friends also make appearances, with tributes from Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, and Jackson Browne. “Kris wrote songs that weren’t just hits,” Nelson says in the film. “He wrote truths. And that’s something we’ll always need.”
In addition to music, the footage reflects on Kristofferson’s career in film, from A Star Is Born (1976) opposite Barbra Streisand to roles in Blade, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Despite his critical and commercial success on screen, Kris always considered himself a songwriter first.
“I never chased the spotlight,” he says in the film. “I just wanted to say something real. If people listened, that was a bonus.”
The documentary ends on a quietly powerful note, with Kristofferson sitting beneath a fading sunset, singing a stripped-down version of “For the Good Times.” His voice cracks slightly as he delivers the final line: “Let’s just be glad we had some time to spend together.”
Reactions to the film have been overwhelmingly emotional, with fans taking to social media to express their gratitude and sadness. “This man wrote the soundtrack of my life,” one fan tweeted. “I’m crying watching him say goodbye, but also thankful he shared his heart one more time.”
While Kristofferson hasn’t specified how much longer he plans to stay in the public eye, the documentary makes it clear that he is preparing to step away for good. Still, his music and words will live on—etched not just into vinyl and film, but into the memories of millions who found solace and strength in his honesty.
As one of the last great voices of his generation, Kris Kristofferson is choosing to leave not with a roar, but with a whisper full of wisdom, love, and peace. And as he fades from the stage, the world listens—one last time—to the soul of a poet who truly made every moment count.

Under a gray Los Angeles sky, mourners gathered at St. Paul’s Chapel to honor Malcolm-Jamal Warner. But when Adele and Adam Lambert stepped forward, grief turned to something transcendent. With trembling hands and tear-filled eyes, they began a haunting duet of “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Behind them, black-and-white images of Malcolm’s life flickered. Midway, Adam’s voice broke—Adele reached for his hand and whispered, “We’ve got you.” No applause followed, only silence and sobs.
