During the House Oversight Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services hearing, Representative Lee began her opening remarks by criticizing the forthcoming testimonies, anticipating “transphobic bigotry.” She expressed disappointment that the hearing would focus on such perspectives, stating, “It’s disappointing to me that… we’re likely going to be forced to listen to transphobic bigotry.”

When it was her turn, Gaines addressed Lee’s comments directly, asserting, “If my testimony makes me ‘transphobic,’ then I believe your opening monologue makes you a misogynist.”

Lee objected to Gaines’ remarks, requesting they be struck from the record. However, after a brief discussion, the objection was withdrawn, and the hearing proceeded.

The hearing centered on the Biden administration’s proposed changes to Title IX, aiming to expand the definition of sexual discrimination to include gender identity. If enacted, these changes would allow transgender athletes to compete in sports aligning with their gender identity, a topic that has sparked national debate regarding fairness and safety in women’s sports.

Gaines has been an outspoken critic of these proposed changes, arguing that allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports undermines fairness and safety. Her testimony and subsequent exchange with Representative Lee highlight the deep divisions and passionate opinions surrounding this issue.
