Whoopi Goldberg Claps Back at Calls to Cancel ‘The View’: “We Don’t Tell You What to Think”

Whoopi Goldberg is not holding back. The legendary actress and talk show host has had enough of the critics who are constantly calling for The View to be taken off the air.

On Thursday’s episode, she fired back at those who claim the show pushes a biased agenda, making it clear that The View is about open discussion—not telling people what to believe.

Goldberg Takes on the Haters

For years, The View has been a lightning rod for political debate, often drawing the ire of conservative viewers.

Calls for the show’s cancellation flood social media daily, but Goldberg isn’t fazed. Instead, she’s setting the record straight.

“People assume that we believe whatever they believe that we believe,” Goldberg said during the episode.

“People believe that they know everything I think and believe. They don’t. One of the ways you learn what people believe is to hear them talk.”

Her comments came after a panel discussion about California Governor Gavin Newsom’s engagement with political opponents and his stance on trans women competing in women’s sports.

“We Don’t Tell You What to Think”

Goldberg then addressed the ongoing backlash that The View faces from critics who claim the show is pushing an agenda.

“One of the things people would love to see—people always say, ‘You should take The View off television.’ You know why? Because we give you an opportunity,” Goldberg stated.

“We don’t tell you what to think, we say, ‘This is what I think.’ When we do that, that is how you have the dialogue. It’s not personal, you know?”

She also slammed the tendency of critics to resort to personal attacks.

“It becomes an awful thing when people become personal about you or your family,” she said. “That kind of name-calling—that’s the difference between real discourse and what some people do.

We don’t do that here. Other people do it to us and would like to think that’s what we’re doing to them. But we’re not.”

Fiery Debates & Heated Clashes

Goldberg’s comments come as The View continues to make headlines for its intense on-air discussions, which frequently lead to clashes between cohosts.

In June 2023, Republican panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin and cohost Sunny Hostin got into a tense exchange over former President Donald Trump. Hostin pressed Griffin on her past work for Trump’s administration, leading Griffin to fire back.

“Well, Sunny likes to make it personal with me,” Griffin snapped, calling the moment a “disgrace” before the show cut to a commercial break.

“Are you going to give me a chance to answer? I mean, this is absurd. This is not what this show is about. This is Barbara Walters’ legacy—let a woman speak!”

Former cohost Meghan McCain has also been vocal about the behind-the-scenes tensions, previously describing the environment at The View as a “toxic work culture” and referring to some of her former colleagues as “crazy old people.”
