Sunny Hostin Sparks Firestorm on ‘The View’: Calls Trump’s Mass Deportations ‘Racist’ and Illegal

Sunny Hostin ignited a firestorm on Monday’s episode of The View, branding Donald Trump’s mass deportation efforts as inherently ‘racist’ and legally dubious.

Hostin’s explosive remarks, made just minutes into the broadcast, sent shockwaves across the panel, sparking heated debate and prompting swift pushback from co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin.

Sunny Hostin used her platform on The View Monday to call the mass deportations being carried out by Donald Trump inherently 'racist'

The controversy erupted when Whoopi Goldberg noted Hostin’s visible frustration as the discussion turned to the nationwide deportation sweeps under Trump’s directive.

Encouraged by Goldberg, Hostin—herself a seasoned attorney—did not hold back.

Hostin’s Bold Accusations: A Racist Agenda?

In an impassioned monologue, Hostin accused Trump’s administration of selectively targeting immigrants based on race.

The conversation, at that point, had just turned to the deportations taking place across the country

“They overstay their visas so they’re undocumented,” she declared, arguing that undocumented European immigrants are largely ignored in these crackdowns.

“The Europeans who come here are undocumented, but they don’t come across the southern border.

So I think there’s a very clear message as to what this president wants the look of a criminal migrant to be.”

Hostin’s remarks, however, faced immediate scrutiny.

Griffin, the panel’s lone Republican, quickly pointed out factual inaccuracies in Hostin’s argument, explaining that statistics she cited referred to documented visitors rather than undocumented immigrants.

Ana Navarro, herself an immigrant, supported Hostin’s broader claim, noting that many of those on visas overstay their legal welcome.

Longtime panelist Whoopi Goldberg introduced the topic by calling attention to Hostin's face before giving her the floor. A visibly irate Hostin went on to claim the deportations were racist for not targeting Europeans, mistakenly citing a statistic involving documented immigrants

Legal Controversy: Is Trump Breaking the Law?

Hostin escalated her critique, accusing Trump of circumventing established immigration law by mobilizing the U.S. military to enforce deportations.

“Instead of dealing with it legally, what [Trump] did was declare a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border—nowhere else—which opened the door for the Department of Defense to deploy troops at a 60% increase,” she stated.

Hostin further alleged that the operation was rife with racial profiling, citing reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents had mistakenly detained U.S.  citizens, including a Puerto Rican military veteran.

“For the 50 millionth time—Puerto Ricans are Americans and disproportionately serve in the military,” she emphasized.

Lone Republican Alyssa Farrah Griffin chimed in to point this out, but Hostin continued to try to get her point across

Backlash and Support: Dividing America Yet Again

The conversation took a dramatic turn when Griffin, a former Trump aide who voted for Kamala Harris, weighed in with a controversial take.

She pointed out that some Latino voters who supported Trump were now facing the repercussions firsthand.

Griffin - a Kamala Harris voter who once worked for Trump - went on to bash legal Latinos, suggesting they were at least in part to blame for the ongoing arrests

“I’ve actually seen videos this weekend of Latinos who voted for Trump crying because now their abuelas and tios are getting deported,” Griffin remarked.

“I’m having a very hard time mustering up any sympathy for those people.”

Navarro, meanwhile, passionately defended immigrants caught up in the crackdown.

“The point of this operation is cruelty,” she argued.

“The point is instilling fear. And it’s also very costly.”

As the discussion continued, the tension in the room was palpable.

While Goldberg and others on the panel largely agreed with Hostin, Griffin repeatedly sought to inject “clarity” into the conversation, countering Hostin’s sweeping claims with factual corrections.

This caused Ana Navarro, an immigrant herself, to claim many of the sample set still overstay their welcome after being granted a visa - a claim Hostin latched onto

Social media exploded in response to the heated exchange, with conservatives blasting Hostin for spreading misinformation and liberals rallying behind her fiery condemnation of Trump’s policies.

Despite the factual inconsistencies, Goldberg and other panelists appeared to agree, with Griffin offering clarification to Hostin's comments along the way

With Trump’s immigration crackdown intensifying and the 2024 election looming, the debate over America’s handling of undocumented immigrants is far from over.

If Monday’s episode of The View is any indication, it’s a conversation that will only grow louder—and more divisive—in the weeks ahead.
