Millie Bobby Brown Slams Critics for Calling Her ‘Too Old-Looking’: “You Met Me at 10, My Face Grew—What Do You Want Me to Do?”
Millie Bobby Brown is done staying silent. The Stranger Things star is firing back at tabloid scrutiny over her appearance, calling out those who constantly comment on how she looks “older” than her age.
“My Face Grew. What Do You Want Me to Do?”
During a recent interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the 21-year-old actress addressed the relentless media obsession with her appearance, particularly claims that she “looks 40.”
“A thing that I get a lot is like, ‘Oh my God, she looks like 40,’” Brown told host Alex Cooper. “And I’m like, well yeah, you did meet me when I was 10, so I understand.
Now I’m 21, it’s been 10 years. She grows. My face, like, grew. What do you want me to do about that?”
Sick of the Scrutiny
Despite years of harsh judgment from the media, Brown says she’s reached a point where the negativity no longer affects her like it used to.
“I wish I could be like, ‘You know what, it does get to me.’ It used to get to me, it did,” she admitted. “And I remember trying to change myself to please the masses.
But actually, now I’m in a place where, yeah, my accent does change. My face does grow. I do wear a lot of makeup. It’s just the kind of person I am.”
On March 3, Brown took to Instagram to call out specific members of the press for “bullying” her and dissecting her appearance.
In a powerful video, she reminded her followers that she has essentially grown up under a microscope.
“I started in this industry when I was 10 years old,” she wrote in the caption. “I grew up in front of the world, and for some reason, people can’t seem to grow with me.
Instead, they act like I’m supposed to stay frozen in time, like I should still look the way I did on Stranger Things Season 1. And because I don’t, I’m now a target.”
“The Press Needs to Learn Some Manners”
Speaking candidly on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Brown said she finds the treatment she’s received in the media to be “disgusting” and believes change is long overdue.
“I can’t believe it still happens. And if I can do anything to change it, I would,” she said.
“If I had a genie wish, I really would wish that no one ever had to go through that kind of scrutiny because it changes the kind of person you are.”
She went on to criticize the industry’s double standards, especially when it comes to young women.
“The press just needs to be taught manners again,” she added. “They need to go back to school and learn how to speak to people, be kind, and just understand that we’re all growing people. We all make mistakes. Ultimately, the standards and stigmas against girls—it’s ridiculous.”
No More Holding Back
Brown, who is currently promoting her new Netflix film The Electric State alongside Chris Pratt, said she finally decided to speak out after years of brushing the issue aside.
“I kept making excuses, like it’s just not the right time or I shouldn’t do it, people are going to respond badly,” she told Jimmy Fallon during an appearance on The Tonight Show.
“And then I realized, I just keep making excuses because I’m afraid. And when is the right time for a woman to stand up for herself? Actually, I can’t wait any longer.”
With her fearless attitude and refusal to stay silent, Millie Bobby Brown is making it clear—she’s not a little girl anymore, and she’s not going to let anyone tell her who she should be.
