Lucy Hale Reveals She Auditioned for ‘Hannah Montana’ Before Miley Cyrus – Says It Inspired Her Acting Career!

Did you know Lucy Hale was almost Disney Channel’s biggest pop star? Before Miley Cyrus landed the role of a lifetime, Hale auditioned for Hannah Montana—and though she didn’t get it, she says the experience was life-changing.

While appearing on Buzzfeed’s The Puppy Interview, the Pretty Little Liars star shared some of the biggest roles she lost out on over the years, including Pitch Perfect, Hairspray (2007), Fifty Shades of Grey, and The Substance. But it was Hannah Montana that left the biggest impact on her.

🎤 “It was a couple of years before they cast Miley,” Hale recalled. “I remember the audition—it was a taped audition in Tennessee.

That audition made me want to be an actress. I remember it vividly. It was very cool.”

Missing Out on ‘Hannah Montana’ – But Gaining a Career

Though she didn’t land the Disney Channel role, Hale’s career didn’t take long to take off. Her first TV appearance was a small but memorable part on Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh at just 15 years old.

📺 “I was very nervous,” she admitted, laughing as she recalled her one-line debut. “Drake’s character asks me my name, and I go, ‘Hazel!’ And he says, ‘Like the nut?’ And I go, ‘Uh-huh!’ And that’s it.”

She jokingly added, “Groundbreaking. My career skyrocketed from there.”

Thousands Auditioned, But Miley Cyrus Won the Role

Hannah Montana, which told the story of a regular teen leading a secret double life as a superstar, premiered in 2006 and became a global sensation.

The role turned Miley Cyrus into a household name, but it wasn’t an easy win.

Initially, Disney almost rejected Cyrus because they thought she was too young for the part. She was up against other familiar faces, including Taylor Momsen (Gossip Girl) and Daniella Monet (Zoey 101, Victorious).

🎶 Ultimately, Cyrus got the gig, and the show ran for four seasons, launching a world tour, concert film, and feature-length movie.

No Regrets for Lucy Hale

Despite losing out on the Disney role (and others), Hale insists she has no hard feelings.

💬 “For every ‘yes’ to an audition, there’s a lineup of 200 ‘no’s,” she said. “But everyone who gets the role—it’s meant to be their thing.”

And while she never became Hannah Montana, she went on to find success in Hollywood with roles in Pretty Little Liars, Truth or Dare, and Katy Keene.
