On Thursday, the 80-year-old journalist appeared on The View and dropped a bombshell—revealing that a “toxic relationship” with a fellow co-host on The Five played a major role in his decision to leave the network.

At the time of his exit, Rivera initially suggested he left The Five of his own accord.

But now, he’s setting the record straight: he was fired.

Clashes Behind the Scenes

“I had a very toxic relationship with another of the cast members,” Rivera admitted during his interview with The View co-hosts.

The Five is a panel show featuring four conservative voices and one liberal commentator.

Rivera, who rotated in that liberal seat alongside Jessica Tarlov and Harold Ford Jr., often butted heads with the show’s right-leaning personalities—Jesse Watters, Dana Perino, Jeanine Pirro, and Greg Gutfeld.

Rivera notably had heated on-air exchanges with Gutfeld, calling him “an arrogant punk” during a debate about abortion.

In another viral moment, he snapped at Gutfeld for pointing at him while arguing about electric vehicles.

Though Rivera didn’t name names when asked which co-host he feuded with, he hinted at it, laughing, “I may get there for you.

The Moment That Led to His Exit

Rivera revealed that he received a call from two female Fox News executives who informed him he was being removed from The Five—but they suggested he could take on other roles at the network.

But for Rivera, that wasn’t an option.

The Five

“I had a year and a half left on my contract and I said, ‘Well, stop it.

If you fired me from the No.

1 show, then I’m going to quit.

And that’s basically what happened,” he explained.

Despite the bitter ending, Rivera acknowledged that the network treated him well in his final days, adding:

“They really were so nice, remembering all the things we did together over 20-odd years.

Remember, I went there to be a war correspondent after the 9/11 attacks.

Feeling ‘Unfairly Treated’

Rivera didn’t hold back about his frustrations with Fox News, saying he felt like the network always took his rival’s side during their disputes.

“I thought that it was very unfair that I was not judged objectively.

He was always favored,” Rivera said.

He also revealed that his appearances on the show were gradually cut down—from several times a week, to bi-weekly, then monthly, before they completely disappeared.

“They were canceled at the last minute, right before I was supposed to go on.

 So, I was a really ticked-off guy.

What’s Next for Rivera?

Though Rivera admits he was angry at the time, he now says he’s ready to move forward.

“I’m not mad at anybody now, I’m a free person.

I have no idea what I’m gonna do next.

When asked why Fox News didn’t just create a new show for him, Rivera admitted that his ideology never quite fit with the network’s direction.

“They always kind of squeezed me in.

I came as a war correspondent… but the reason I went to Fox was gone.

I should have left in 2011.

 But I didn’t.

Looking Back on His Legacy

Rivera officially signed off from Fox News on June 30, just days before celebrating his 80th birthday on the Fourth of July.

In his final segment on Fox & Friends, the longtime journalist became emotional, saying:

“I feel very emotional and deeply moved.

I will always remember this morning.

This celebration is beyond the beyond.

While Rivera’s time at Fox News may have ended on a sour note, one thing is clear—he’s far from finished.
