Oscar-winning actor Ben Affleck has finally addressed his high-profile divorce from Jennifer Lopez, clearing up months of speculation about what really went wrong.

In an exclusive cover interview for GQ’s April 2025 issue, the Accountant 2 star, 52, opens up about the reality behind their split, why he chose to be part of Lopez’s 2024 documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told, and how their different approaches to fame may have played a role in their breakup.

“People want to identify a root cause, but the truth is far more ordinary than they think,” Affleck shares.

Affleck Speaks on the “Fundamental Difference” in Their Relationship

Affleck, known for his private and reserved nature, admits that his personality often clashed with Lopez’s more public and open approach to fame.

“She has handled celebrity far more adeptly than I ever have,” Affleck acknowledges.

“My instinct is to keep things private, but that’s not how she operates.

 And that’s okay—it’s just about figuring out how to navigate that together.”

Despite this difference, Affleck insists their breakup wasn’t due to any major fallout or betrayal.

“It’s not like you can watch the documentary and suddenly go, ‘Oh, now I get why they broke up,’” he explains.

“It wasn’t some big dramatic event.

 It’s just two people trying to figure out their lives.”

The Power Couple’s Final Chapter

Affleck and Lopez’s love story has been one of Hollywood’s most legendary romances, spanning over two decades.

 

The couple first got engaged in 2002, called it off in 2003, and rekindled their relationship in 2021.

They tied the knot in 2022 with two lavish ceremonies—one in Las Vegas and another at Affleck’s Georgia estate.

However, by August 2024, Lopez filed for divorce, and their separation was finalized in January 2025.

Affleck acknowledges the public’s fascination with their relationship but dismisses any dramatic conspiracy theories surrounding their split.

“There’s no scandal, no soap opera, no big reveal,” he says.

“At the end of the day, it’s just life.

 Relationships are complicated, and sometimes, they don’t work out the way we hope.”

Jennifer Lopez: “No Regrets” About Their Love Story

Lopez, 55, has also reflected on their breakup, sharing her own perspective in a candid October 2024 interview with Interview magazine.

“Not one second,” she said when asked if she regrets their relationship.

“That doesn’t mean it didn’t almost take me out for good.

 It almost did.

 But now, on the other side of it, I think, ‘F—, that is exactly what I needed.’”

Lopez has been channeling her emotions into her music and career, while Affleck remains focused on acting, directing, and his family.

Despite their split, Affleck insists there is nothing but respect between them.

“She’s an incredible person,” he says.

“I want nothing but happiness for her.  Always.”

As Affleck and Lopez move forward separately, one thing remains clear: their love story, no matter how it ended, was one for the history books.
