Dolly Parton is standing by her duet with Kid Rock, following his Bud Light controversy.
The country icon, 77, shared that she accepts the musician, 52, for who he is during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where she also condemned ‘terrible’ cancel culture.
Speaking of the song Either Or – from her latest Rockstar album – she shared: ‘I did a song with Kid Rock on this album. Of course I did that before the controversy that he had, but somebody was talking to me the other day, “How could you do this [song] with Kid?”‘
‘I said, “Hey, just because I love you don’t mean I don’t love Kid Rock. Just because I love Kid Rock don’t mean I don’t love you.” I don’t condemn or criticize. I just accept and love,’ Parton explained.
Over the summer, Kid Rock (born Robert James Ritchie) ignited a nationwide and massive protest against Bud Light following the brand’s roll out of a series with pride colors to celebrate LGBTQ+ individuals and its association with transgender TikTok influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

In a show of attention-grabbing antics, the singer and rapper dramatically shot up a few 12-packs of Bud Light beer with a semi-automatic rifle, all while casually sharing his disdain for the brand.
There was plenty of backlash, especially after Rock was pictured soon after he shared his protest video, showing him drinking a Bud Light, which angered those who initially supported his protest against the brand.
When asked about her thoughts on cancel culture, Parton takes the same kind of ‘don’t condemn or criticize’, just ‘accept and love’ approach.
‘I think that’s terrible,’ the I Will Always Love You singer said of cancel culture, before explaining her rationale. ‘We all make mistakes. We don’t all get caught at it.’
The rural Tennessee native continued, ‘But also when somebody makes a mistake, it depends on who they are. That’s what God is there for. Now, I happen to believe in God; I’m a faith-based person, so therefore I am able to see it like that. A lot of people don’t, but even still, everybody deserves a second chance.’
Parton added, ‘You deserve to be innocent until you’re proven guilty. Even when you’re proven guilty, if God can forgive you, so can I. If God can forgive you, we all should forgive one another.’
While the so-called Queen Of Country has been a supporter and proponent of the LGBTQ+ community over the years, she also stands by her decision to work with Kid Rock and keep their song on her upcoming Rockstar album.
In fact, she went as far as to state that she would have likely collaborated with him, whether there was a controversy tied to him or not.

Real or theatrics: Rock’s sincerity was questioned shortly after this video was made public when he was pictured drinking a Bud Light
‘Like I said, I had done that before, but I’d have probably still done it, because he is a gifted guy, and that song was about a bad boy,’ Parton admitted.
‘It was about a boy that was cheating and mistreating her. But like I say, I love everybody. I don’t criticize, I don’t condone nor condemn. I just accept them. But anyhow, just because I love you don’t mean I don’t love Kid Rock in that God way.’
Later in the interview, the Jolene star elaborated on her support for the LGBTQ+ community as it relates to a recent bill passed in her home state of Tennessee that allows for discrimination against trans people.
‘Well, what I always say, “I just want everybody to be treated good.” I try not to get into the politics of everything. I try to get into the human element of it,’ she responded.
Parton went on to reveal, ‘I have some of everybody in my own immediate family and in my circle of employees. I’ve got transgender people. I’ve got gays. I’ve got lesbians. I’ve got drunks. I’ve got drug addicts — all within my own family. I know and love them all, and I do not judge.’
Last year, the acclaimed singer-songwriter was honored with her entree into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Initially confused with the idea of a country music artist being inducted into the hallowed halls of rock, but Parton grew to understand her tribute, and then got the itch to finally record a rock record.
