In doing so she will finally treat the fans to a long-awaited reunion with the show’s leading ladies Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
Lily, 82, Jane, 83, and Dolly, 75, starred in the iconic 1980 comedy 9 To 5 about secretaries getting back at their ‘sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot’ boss.
At long last: Dolly Parton has been tapped to guest-star on the upcoming last season of Grace And Frankie, Netflix tweeted Friday
Grace And Frankie, whose co-creator Marta Kauffman also helped create Friends, is coming up on its seventh season.
Jane and Lily star as diametrically opposite women – an elegant martini-swilling martinet and a relaxed New Age type – who wind up living together.
They find themselves having to stay in the same house after their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) leave them for each other.
While Dolly’s role has not been disclosed she follows a top-flight array of guest stars including Lisa Kudrow, Talia Shire, Elliot Gould, Sam Elliot and Mary Steenburgen.
There they are: In doing so she will finally treat the fans to a long-awaited reunion with the show’s leading ladies Jane Fonda (left) and Lily Tomlin (right) who are pictured on the series
Written and directed by Colin Higgins, 9 To 5 featured a beloved theme song by Dolly and became a runaway hit raking in north of $100 million at the box office.
Jane, whose company IPC Films produced the picture, was the one who brought her two co-leads aboard marking Dolly’s feature film debut.
During an onstage interview for the BFI Jane recalled that the film was meant to be a ‘dark comedy’ until she saw Lily perform onstage.
She ‘was just stunned by her brilliance’ and ‘said to myself: “I don’t wanna make a movie about secretaries unless Lily Tomlin is in it.”‘

One of Lily’s most famous sketch characters in the 1970s was a daffy telephone operator called Ernestine, a bit she introduced on Rowan And Martin’s Laugh-In.
In the car after Lily’s show Jane heard Dolly singing Two Doors Down on the radio and instantly decided she wanted the country star in the film too.
Jane thought: ‘Oh my goodness, she’s never been in a movie but if Dolly was in a movie – and imagine she can’t even see her hands, you know, and she’s trying to type with her big breasts and her long fingernails.’
After Jane spent a year persuading Dolly and Lily to get on board, she had the script rewritten and an instant classic was born.
What a way to make a living: In the movie the three leading ladies abduct their boss played by Dabney Coleman, trap him in his bedroom and take over the company
In the movie the three leading ladies abduct their boss played by Dabney Coleman, trap him in a room and take over the company.
Jane has said the premise came from a meeting she and Colin attended that was arranged by 9to5, National Association Of Working Women.
She said they spoke with ’30 or 40 women from different companies, banks and insurance companies’ who ‘all went around and told their stories.’
Pour myself a cup of ambition: Jane, whose company IPC Films produced the picture, was the one who brought her two co-leads aboard marking Dolly’s feature film debut
The Klute star added: ‘And then – this is why he was a genius – he said: “Do you ever fantasize what would you like to do to your boss?” I mean, we couldn’t use a lot of what was said. Oh my God! But that formed the basis of, you know, of the movie.’
Dolly, Lily and Jane have remained friends with one another since, even appearing together onstage at the 2017 Emmy Awards.
For years Jane was trying to get a sequel up and running with herself, Dolly and Lily but that project has apparently fizzled.
Dolly told Entertainment Tonight late in 2019: ‘I don’t think we’re going to do the sequel. We never could get the script where it was enough different than the first one, and that one turned out so good.’
